When the Assyrians deported the Israelites, they did not call them Israelites, rather they referred to them as Khumri or Bit Khumri, after the "house of Omri" one of their notable kings. This word Khumri the Greeks transliterated as Kimmeroi, and the Romans followed, the result being the modern English Cimmerians.
